Cities of Kagoshima

Kokubo City At the Forest of Uenohara Jomon Site, extensive ruins of an ancient village were uncovered in 1996. This was settled from the early Jomon period (BC.8000 - BC.300). With 46 pit dwellings it is perhaps the largest archaeological site in Japan for this period. This site is administered by the Kagoshima Prefectural Buried Cultural Assets Center. Access: Uenohara, Kirishima Town (about 40 km NE from Kagoshima City); bus services from JR Kokubu Sta. (25 mins). From Kagoshima City: 35 min. by rail.

Sendai Historical Museum in Sendai City, about 50 km NW from Kagoshima City). Displays objects from the last 20,000 years of Sendai`s past. Access: Open 9 am - 5 pm.
