Archaeology and Organisations in Japan

Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO, ACCU Based in Nara and has an annual Training Course on Cultural Heritage Conservation. Supports visits for training by the staff of cultural institutions throughout Asia and the Pacific. The theme varies each year, but often involves teachers from archaeological research institutions in Nara.

Anthropological Society of Nippon Publishes the journal Anthropological Science, containing Jomon and other archaeological reports (especially wrt Jomon physical anthropology and osteoarchaeology).

Cetacean Zooarchaeology Research Network, an informal network of individuals whose research interests include cetacean remains in archaeological contexts.

Current Research in Japan is an illustrated report from a visit to sites and archaeological research institutions in Japan in 1997 (Glen Doran, Department of Anthropology, Florida State University).

Memory of Jomon Period

An important collection of essays and photographs from the University of Tokyo, by various authors. Records the history of Jomon research in Japan, and introduces Jomon life. This online resource was prepared to accompany an exhibition at the National Museum of Japanese History.

Origins of Japanese Peoples and Cultures

Website of a research project headed by Dr Keiichi Omoto: An Interdisciplinary Study of the Origins of Japanese Peoples and Cultures. A long-term project running since 1997. Very broad ranging with many sub-projects headed by researchers around Japan. Two foci of the archaeology section are transitional periods for which social evolution is more obvious: from the Paleolithic to Jomon (ca. 12,000 BP), and from the Jomon to Yayoi (ca. 400 BC).
