Yokohama History Museum
A fantastic display of 20,000 years of Yokohama prehistory and history, from ancient to modern periods. The architecture of the building and each display are perfectly integrated, and the archaeology displays relate directly to Jomon and Yayoi archaeological sites preserved and displayed in the neighbouring park (Otsuka Saikachido Site). The Palaeolithic and Jomon displays illustrate life in each period, and are accompanied by a vertical-section the Kanto volcanic ash deposits, and a horizontal plan and panorama of the local landscape during the Jomon period. Interactions between the Yokohama area and the other regions are demonstrated beautifully in a display of Jomon pottery styles and obsidian sources. Don't miss the video demonstration of sea-level change in the adjacent display of Yayoi archaeology. Basic information in English, Chinese, and Korean is provided (main signs), but the physical design is exceptionally easy to understand. Website is currently in Japanese only.
